The Escarpment is a region where the land sweeps down from a high altitude to what is known as the Lowveld. Along this escarpment are mountains, forests, waterfalls and lakes, while the lowveld is characteristically flat with completely different vegetation. There are spectacular viewpoints along the escarpment and the area is well worth exploring on a self drive holiday.

There are some wonderful accommodation establishments in this lovely area, including Blue Mountain Lodge, Cybele Forest Lodge and Chestnut Country Lodge, while those wishing to do day drives into Kruger might prefer Protea Hotel Kruger Gate or Kruger Park Lodge just outside the reserve.
