The great colonialist Cecil John Rhodes was so impressed by the scenic grandeur of the Motobo Hills that he arranged to be buried among the massive granite rock domes, as did the great warrior king Mzilikazi. The ancient San people also regarded the area as sacred and left many paintings on the walls of caves in the area.

Tucked away in the Matobo is Camp Amalinda, a superb accommodation offering a mix of culture and safari, including elephant back rides.
