San Camp overlooks the endless white salt sea of the extinct Makgadikagadi and offers a unique chance to explore the Kalahari. CAMP ONLY RE-OPENING IN 2011. |

San Camp is located on a grass covered bay that overlooks the endless white salt sea of the extinct Makgadikagadi superlake and directly adjoining the National Park.
San Camp, along with Jack's Camps, are unique in that they are the only permanent camps to offer a chance to explore and understand the Kalahari. The concession adjoins the Makgadikgadi National Park with its endless vistas of rolling golden grasslands. Desert palms line the horizon . . . . . Behind us are the huge salt pans of the Makgadikgadi.
Theories as to how and when this vast geographic phenomenon was formed, vary. Our aim is to attempt to unravel some of the mysteries while providing the sophisticated traveller a first class traditional safari.

After the rains (December to April), there can be enormous herds of Wildebeest, Zebra and Springbok (with the accompanying predators) on the open grasslands.
The summer rains also leave a warm shallow layer of water that entices waterfowl and flamingos. Activities are conducted in open 4x4 vehicles, custom designed for this terrain and accompanied by knowledgeable guides. In the winter months only, all-purpose ATV vehicles (four wheeler motorcycles/Quad bikes) are available, allowing guests to travel across the saltpans.
Walks with a Bushman tracker and visits to historical boabab trees used by Livingstone and Selous are alternative options.

A maximum of 12 guests are accommodated in 6 large walk-in white canvas tents on slightly elevated wooden platforms with private facilities.
Camp amenities include a mess tent for dining.
Great news is that fresh potable water was recently (2005) found at San Camp, so this camp now has running water and flush toilets.

For groups of four or more on five night safaris, we offer the option of fly-camping by quad-bike to Kubu Island. A fascinating granite island studded with baobabs suddenly erupting from the pan floor, inhabited by san salt miners until as recently as the 1950's.
