Special activities: An option to overnight in a Traditional African Village: One of the most popular activities at Camp Amalinda, Matobo Hills, Zimbabwe, has been the tour to a local village, school and traditional healer. This has been taken a step further and now Amalinda offers visitors the opportunity to stay overnight in a genuine African village. The village chosen belongs to a Mr. Ndebele and is located in the Khumalo Communal lands a mere 15km from Camp Amalinda. This communal land borders the Matobo National Park and the typical Matobo granite scenery extends into this area. In fact the village is built in the shadows of a spectacular granite outcrop. The aim is to provide guests with a complete cultural experience - to become part of the village for a 24 hour period. Learn about "ukulima" - ploughing with oxen; "senga" - milking the cows; and "ukugiga" grinding the maize for the evening meal. Visitors will see how water is carried for miles in a 5 gallon container balancing on women's heads. Even the collection of firewood is no easy task. In the evening everybody sits around the fire for "Inganu" - the local tradition of storytelling. One of Mr Ndebele's wives is a traditional healer and guests may learn about ancient healing methods which have been passed down from Mother to Daughter over hundreds of years. Evening meals will be of a local flair and consist of maize, potatoes, chicken and beef varieties. Some of the more exotic local delicacies will be on offer should our guests wish to sample, eg: "macimbi" - sun dried mopane worms; "amazambane" - freshly roasted groundnuts; "amagodo" - home grown watermelons etc. Accommodation will be in a mud hut with thatched roof. Traditionally the Ndebeles sleep on a reed mat on the floor, however there will be regular beds and fresh linen for the visitors. This hut has been specially built for the guests exclusive use. An outdoor bathroom is situated at the back of the hut. This is constructed of grass up to the height of 6 foot and is fitted with a bucket shower, chemical toilet and wash hand basin with water pitcher. Guests will be accompanied by one of the Amalinda guides who are fluent in both English and Ndebele. These people live a simple life and do not utilize knives, forks, cutlery, etc. Therefore all the cooking equipment is taken into the village. Amalinda's team is aware of their guest's hygienic requirements and will ensure a high standard throughout. A genuinely unique cultural experience can be guaranteed and there will be the opportunity to meet these amazing people and hopefully make lasting friendships.
