Ragged roofs of thatch rise primitively through the branches of jackalberry trees in the untamed bushveld and mopane woodlands on the western border of the Kruger National Park. |

Located close to the mighty Drakensberg Mountains, west of the Kruger National Park, lies Makalali Private Game Reserve. (Makalali means "Place of Rest" in local Shangaan language)
The setting is so wild and the structures so African, that first time visitors may well imagine they have stumbled across the village of some undiscovered tribe.
But as you get closer, the breathtaking ethnic architecture of the thatched units, a sparkling swimming pool and the scent of sizzling impala kebabs dispel the notion.
This is Makalali Private Game Reserve, a 10 000 hectare reserve, opened in April 1996.
The rugged terrain includes rocky hillocks and lush riverine vegetation, which then tapers off into a mix of mopane woodland and bushveld, backdropped by the spectacular Drakensberg mountains.

Four exclusive camps each consisting of six spacious suites have been built along the shady banks of the river. Each of the four camps is totally private, yet within easy access of each other. Guests may reserve individual camps as their own, or else may combine all four camps for exclusive seminars of incentive groups. Each camp offers luxury accommodation and consists of 6 spacious guest huts, each with a large bedroom and bathroom suite, adjacent day room or "sala" built on stilts, nestled in the branches of jackalberry trees, that is ideal for game viewing or meditation. The rooms are decorated in African design styles with vivid Kente cloths and sculptured taps and basins. Additionally, each camp has its own uniquely designed swimming pool, boma and enclosed dining and lounge area. A new art and merchandise gallery was built in April 1998 and offers guests a tranquil place to view the river, to shop, browse for art, read a historical account of the Reserve and the area or just relax.
