▼ POSITION
Garonga is an exclusive 14-bed safari camp situated west of Kruger National Park, between Hoedspruit and Phalaborwa, in South Africa's Northern Province. The reserve forms part of the Makalali wildlife conservancy and offers an in-depth experience for bush-lovers seeking more than the classic "Big Five" encounter. This is what the owners have to say: "When we first stumbled upon this land, we knew instantly what we had found. A land of offering - a bushveld haven, nestling below the Drakensberg Mountains in our country's northern province. The knobthorn, the jackalberry, the maroela tree, grew in profusion. We saw no lights by night, heard no traffic noise by day. We could have been tempted to keep this refuge to ourselves. But we wanted to share the abundance we had found. So we set about developing Garonga that others may explore it with us - and nourish their souls, as we had."

▼ ATTRACTIONS
While offering viewing of big game such as lion, elephant and rhino, Garonga promises a more intimate wildlife encounter by offering walking, tracking and sleep out excursions. "Only a hundred years ago, the Garonga people spoke of Garonga, "the big tusked one, who roamed this land before Man's fences blocked his path," the owners explain. "Now with fences coming down around us, we have witnessed the elephant walk this land again - along with the rhino, the lion, the kudu, the waterbuck and countless other creatures. It is as if this land, in all its abundance, is celebrating new life." April 2003 – Received a gold medal from the AA Gold achiever awards for the third year running.

▼ FACILITIES
Garonga's six luxury suites nestle into ebony trees on the banks of a water course and command beautiful views. Each suite has solid walls, a wooden deck and canvas roof, with indoor and outdoor showers. Camp amenities include an open-plan living area, wine cellar, curio shop, swimming pool as well as a special sala for aromatherapy sessions. The Hambleden Suite: Unparalled luxury accommodation in exceptional surroundings makes the Hambleden Suite a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Rich Balinese influences as well as the romance of old-colonial Africa create a strikingly elegant, warm and tactile atmosphere. Total privacy and exclusivity are the key attributes. Wherever possible, guests will be provided with their own game vehicle. A private pool and a deck that affords superb views provide the finishing touches to this remarkable bush suite. The camp also offers facilities for the disabled. This camp is an organic flowing space that spreads harmony around it. In designing it we rejected rigid thinking and recreated the natural flows of African living. The result is as if the termites had combined forces over eons to build us a monument celebrating nature. Earthen columns reflect the crumbled spires of termite mounds, rough plastered walls echo the sand. It is almost as if we have created a North African oasis - a tranquil haven sheltering us from the wilderness without.

▼ CHILDREN POLICY
  • No children under 8 years old.
8-15 years sharing accommodation with their parents are charged 50% (Max. 2 child per suite)
▼ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Open vehicle game drives, walks, tracking, sleep-out excursions, stargazing, bush dining, aromatherapy, reflexology and massage. Garonga prides itself on offering a holistic wildlife experience. "Many guests come to find inspiration in nature, tracking wildlife in the pre-dawn, or even by moonlight, learning the names of trees, the habits of 350 birds. We encourage them to walk up close to the animals, or to sleep out on a platform in the trees, where they can lie on their backs learning about the constellations. For them, Garonga represents a safari for the soul, a time to replenish energy that is lost. They are the ones who return often, because there is always another layer in nature to savour."
