▼ POSITION
Ndumo lies along KwaZulu - Natal`s northern border with Mozambique, about 470 kms from Durban. Its pulse beats to the rhythm of the Pongola River, whose seasonal floodwaters spill over into a network of pans. Nyamithi (6km long), with its delicate fringes of Fever trees, is the largest of these, followed by Banzi Pan (4km), a crucible for multicoloured waterlilies and other wetland flowers. Smaller pans, such as Sabatana and Bakabana, rise and recede according to the whims of the great Pongola. As the dry season approaches, the level of the pan recedes, exposing large beds of aquatic vegetation which, in turn, attracts thousands of insects and birds.

▼ ATTRACTIONS
This 10 117 ha reserve is home to an enormous diversity of vegetation types. Animals are plentiful at Ndumo, and include about 5 700 nyala (the hunter F C Selous collected specimens of Nyala here for the London Zoo), White and Black Rhino, a herd of about 80 Buffalo, Giraffe, Burchell`s Zebra, Impala, Nyala, Bushbuck, Bushpig, Grey and Red Duiker and Reedbuck. Nocturnal species, such as Pangolin, Aardwolf and Aardvark search the dry ground for food at night, while Hippo and Crocodile are commonly seen near the waters edge by day. The festival of birds is undoubtedly the major attraction at Ndumo, more than 420 species. Apart from the network of forest fringed pans, there's an abundance of lush, sub-tropical bush, huge Fever and Fig trees, and stretches of sandveld nourishing such indigenous trees as Marula, Velvet Bushwillow, Silverleaf and Black Monkeythorn Acacia.
