▼ ATTRACTIONS
For millions of years, a mighty curtain of water eroded away a series of gorges along what was to be named the Zambezi River. It was not until 1855 however, that the presence of this truly spectacular waterfall was made known to the world. Missionary and explorer extraordinaire, David Livingstone, had vowed to find a route to the East Coast of the African continent, having already endured months of hardship travelling south east from Luanda to Sesheke. Some 50 miles along his journey in the company of 120 Makololo tribespeople, he encountered this most magnificent waterfall which he named after his Queen, Victoria. In the 14 years that followed, Livingstone endured life - threatening hardships in the course of his exploration and he was at his lowest ebb in 1871 when he met famous English reporter, Henry Stanley. Stanley had been sent by one J.G.Bennet of the New York Herald specifically to find Livingstone, who had not been heard from for 2 years. Stanley greeted the explorer with the now famous words, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" The two struck up a friendship which was only ended when Stanley elected to return to England in 1872, having failed to persuade the intrepid missionary to accompany him. Dr. David Livingstone died on 1 May 1873, aged 60. He had travelled some 50 000 kilometres in Africa, adding a considerable area to the known portion of the globe and in so doing, he became one of the legendary figures of Southern and Central Africa.
